Color Play Friday: Forget-Me-nots

How is everyone this lovely Friday? I’m hoping to have some fun adventures this weekend, how about you? But first- it’s Friday, so let’s do a little Color Play!

Color Play Friday is hosted by Trina from In An Otter Life and myself. If you’re new to Color Play Friday, head over to my Color Play Friday page to see the rules and my palettes and bundles from previous weeks. You can also search #colorplayfriday on Instagram to see lots of past palettes and bundles.

These gorgeous Forget-me-nots started growing in my garden a few years back and I just love them. The color on them is so vivid!

Forget me nots Palette and Bundle

Here are the fabrics I chose for this garden- inspired bundle:

Alison Glass, Sunprint, Grow in Straw

Amy Butler, Love, Sunspots Olive

Sarah Jane, Sommer, Garden

Eric Carle, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Fingerpainting in Blue

Michael Miller, Ta Dot, in Violet

Eric Carle, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Fingerpainting in Purple

A note about scale:

  • While I believe scale is a very important part of fabric selection, the fabrics shown in my Color Play images are not always perfectly to scale. I do my best, by you should always double check scale before ordering!

Don’t forget to head over to the other blogs and see what they came up with! The fun of Color Play Friday is seeing the differences and similarities between everyone’s bundles.

Participants this week:

Laurel and Pine (that’s me!)

In An Otter Life

Sarah Goer Quilts

Jennifer Lewis

Cloth and Paper Studio

For next week, we have another picture of Purplicious. I wanted another shot at a purple bundle WITHOUT the bother of the red background we had in the previous Purplicious picture.

Color Play Friday: Lycoming Engine

July is here, and I’m finally starting to feel like I’m settling in to summer break!

I chose this photo of Trina’s knowing that I would want to do a Fourth of July-themed bundle. As I started picking colors, I realized that I wasn’t going to get a classic red, white and blue from this picture. But those dusky blues and beautiful reds screamed at me… “Riley Blake!” So off I went to the Riley Blake website to find this fun bundle.

Lycoming Engine Palette and Bundle.jpg

Here are the fabrics I chose:

Zoe Pearn, Lucky Star, Argyle in Navy

Lori Whitlock, Playball 2, Plaid in Blue

Deena Rutter, Offshore, Dot in Red

Riley Blake, 2015 Basics, Red Star

Samantha Walker, Fly Aweigh, Lures in Yellow

Simple Simon and Company, Four Corners, Weave in Gold

A note about scale:

  • While I believe scale is a very important part of fabric selection, the fabrics shown in my Color Play images are not always perfectly to scale. I do my best, by you should always double check scale before ordering!

Lauren’s Doodle Block

Remember a back in May when I encouraged you to ‘see the future’ and embrace the creative possibility in the everyday things around you?

I showed you this…

IMG_8813

…some graph paper doodles of my daughter’s that got me thinking of a new quilt design. (I should note that I did get her permission before designing a quilt based on her drawings!)

Today, I’m thrilled to say that those doodles have become a block -aptly named Lauren’s Doodle Block- that will be appearing in the 2017 Quilter’s Planner.

If you didn’t get yourself a Quilter’s Planner in 2016, let me just tell you- the thing is amazing! This is not just a regular planner with calendar, to-do lists, etc. In there, you also get project planning pages, full quilt patterns from AMAZING designers, quilting reference pages, lots of doodling space, and a new block every week from members of the awesome online quilting community.

I’m so happy to be a part of that group this year!

2017 Quilters planner banner

To learn more and to get on the mailing list for info about the 2017 Quilter’s Planner, visit quiltersplanner.com

So, let’s get to the block, shall we?

File_002(4) - Copy

The magic in Lauren’s Doodle Block happens when you repeat the block and start to see all those plus signs come together. Here are nine blocks set into a 3×3 grid. This would make a perfect 36″ square baby quilt.

 Lauren's Doodle Baby sized

Or you could go for a lap quilt with a 5×6 block layout.

Laurens Doodle Lap sized

I’ll let you decide on a quilt size yourself, but here’s what you’ll need for one block:

The finished block will measure 12.5 inches.

From fabrics A, B, C and D

(4) 2.5″ squares of each

From fabrics E and F

(1) 2.5″ squares of each

From fabric G

(2) 2.5″ squares

From Fabric H

(6) 2.5″ squares

(2) 2.5″ x 6.5″ rectangles

(2) 2.5″ x 4.5″ rectangles

Using a scant quarter inch seam, assemble rows as shown in diagram, pressing as indicated by arrows.

Laurens Doodle Block labeled with pressing instructions

Sew rows together, nestling seams to line up points. Press open, spinning seams wherever possible.

To spin seams:

Press seam to set. Cut the 2-3 stitches that are in the seam allowance.  Start to finger press the seam, spinning the seam allowance in the direction the nestled seams are already pressed.  Press seam from back of the block, then front.

And I figured while I was making one block, I might as well make eight more and get a baby quilt out of the deal!

Here are the fabric requirements for the 36″ square baby quilt shown here:

Fabrics A, B, C, and D

1 FQ or quarter yard

Fabrics E, F and G

Scraps or 5″ x WOF

Fabric H

3/4 yard

I hope you enjoy the block, and I’d love it if you tagged me on Instagram (@laurelpoppyandpine) if you make one!

Happy Sewing! ~L

Modern HST Sampler QAL

Hi Friends! Just a quick post today to share with you my latest blocks from the Modern HST Sampler QAL hosted by Alyce at Blossom Heart Quilts.

We are halfway through our quilt-along and I have really enjoyed it so far. The blocks are getting more complicated, but they still work up fairly quickly. I love the instant gratification of finishing each block.

I got a bit behind during the end of the school year, so yesterday I took a little time and got caught up. Here are my blocks for the last 6 weeks.

Block # 10   Faceted Stripe

Faceted Stripe 1

Instead of one of these blocks in all the same color, I decided to make two sets of HSTs and vary my colors a bit. Then I accidentally got lipstick on one of my orange Oval Elements HSTs (quilting fail!). Instead of making a new HST unit, I found some HSTs made with the orange Oh Clementine crosshatch in my stash and added those in. Mistakes are just design opportunities! Lol

Faceted Stripe 2

Block #11 Starshine

Block #12 Rockpool

So that’s it! I’m glad to be caught up and am looking forward to seeing what Alyce brings us next.

Bonfire Sampler Blocks

Boy, did I ever get behind on this one! The last time I posted about this quilt was way back at the end of March. For the last few months, these block have been getting pushed aside, but I really made an effort the last few weeks to catch up so I can exchange with Trina and Mindy next week.

The Bonfire Quilt is a Block of the Month QAL from GenX Quilters and works out of the book Sister Sampler Quilts. The book includes setting instructions for three sampler quilts total, as well as lots of blocks. You don’t have to have a partner to participate; many people are making two sister blocks and keeping them both for their own quilts.

Here are April’s Blocks, named Box and Star Frame

Laurel Poppy and Pine Box and Star Frame 1Laurel Poppy and Pine Box and Star Frame 2Laurel Poppy and Pine Box and Star Frame 3

And Tulip Lady Fingers, our May Block.

Laurel Poppy and Pine Tulip Lady Fingers.jpg

As you can see, I am still catching up on two of these.

And lastly the June block, Friendship Star

Laurel Poppy and Pine Friendship Star 1Laurel Poppy and Pine Friendship Star 2Laurel Poppy and Pine Friendship Star 3 oops

WHOOPS!

Can I point out that sewing on only three hours of sleep is a bad idea, even if its just a simple pinwheel? My teenage daughter flat out laughed at me when I showed her this.

It was an easy fix, though!

Laurel Poppy and Pine Friendship Star 3.jpg

Hopefully, I’ve learned my lesson and won’t be getting myself three months behind on a swap again any time soon!

Here is this week’s picture!

Sprouts Palette and Bundle.jpg

Right away, I knew I wanted to play with that really cool dark slate color being reflected off of the black plastic. Add in the neon green of the sprouts, and I had a palette that I loved. I went very geometric this week, and of course added in some raindrop prints to represent spring in the Northwest!

Here are the fabrics I chose:

Rashida Coleman-Hale, Raindrop, Geo Dot in Teal

Elizabeth Hartman, Pacific, Raindrops in Navy

Denyse Schmidt, Franklin, Zig Zag in Glen

Latifah Saafir, Grafic, Brick Walls in Sulfur

Rashida Coleman-Hale, Zephyr, Whirlwind in Linen

Micheal Miller, Ta Dot in Starfruit

All my fabrics this week are from Stash Fabrics.

Color Play Friday: Purplicious Gets Coffee

I know most of you are on summer break right now… we’re close. Soooooo close to having my kids home for a few months of having adventures and being lazy together. I can’t wait!

If you’re a new follower (hi, new friends!), Color Play Friday is hosted by Trina from In An Otter Life and me. You can head over to my Color Play Friday page to see the rules and my palettes and bundles from previous weeks.

Our photo this week is from Trina and it makes me curious. Who is Purplicious? Did she (or he?) come with Trina to Seattle from Oklahoma, or was she ‘adopted’ here? And I’ve met Ollie, but where has Purplicious gone?! I’m hoping Trina can clear things up for me.

Purplicious Gets Coffee Palette and Bundle

I was really excited to play with this wonderful purple this week. I was tempted to ignore the red in this picture, but I really wanted to give myself a challenge. Purple, red and teal… there’s a challenge for me! I also gave myself the added task of getting all my fabrics from the same shop. This week, I used JAQS Fabrics. If you get a chance, check out their scrap bundles– love them. (Those are not affiliate links- I really just love JAQS!)

Here are the fabrics I chose:

Nel Whatmore, Katherine’s Wheel, Purple Floral

Micheal Miller, Kiss Dot in Purple

Jan Avellana, A Nod to Mod, String Beads in Blue

Sharon Holland, Sketchbook, Woodblock in Flaxen

Robert Kaufman, Metro Living, Scarlett Ogee

Art Gallery Fabrics Giveaway!

Happy Friday, everyone! I have a fun giveaway for you today sponsored by Art Gallery Fabrics.

A few weeks ago, I shared with you the scrappy denim quilt that I made for Art Gallery Fabric’s absolutely amazing Quilt Market booth.  Check out that post to hear a little more about the making of the quilt.

IMG_8041_2

I was thrilled when my package from AGF arrived full of fabric goodies. They sent me some beautiful prints from various AGF collections, a couple of Pure Elements solids, one of their Denim Prints, and a whole bunch of Solid Smooth Denim to work with.

I was immediately enamored with the denim. It has that beautiful sheen that I admire in other AGF fabrics, but with an added iridescence that was mesmerizing. I kept moving it around the see more of that pretty shine!

I was also struck by how lightweight it is. It looks like jeans, but it has the drape softness of quilting cotton.  I really want to get more of the Printed Denim and use it for some garment sewing as well.

I’ll be honest- pictures cannot do this fabric justice!

IMG_8016_2

Because they compliment each other so well,  I wanted my readers to get a chance to try the Art Gallery Denim along with their quilting cottons. I contacted AGF about doing a giveaway, and they were gracious enough to put together this awesome fat quarter bundle based off the fabrics I used in my quilt!

Blue Bundle_1

So, on to the giveaway!

AGF is will be sending our lucky winner this Fat Quarter Bundle of ten prints/solids.

Color Play Friday: Brick Wall

How in the world is it Friday again already?!

Color Play Friday is hosted by Trina from In An Otter Life and me. If you’re new to Color Play Friday, head over to my Color Play Friday page to see the rules and my palettes and bundles from previous weeks.

So, here is my Color Play for the week!

Brick Wall Palette and Bundle

I was really surprised when I started pulling colors out of those bricks with just how light of pinks I was getting.  I kept trying to find darker red, but no luck. I was a little concerned that I wouldn’t be able to put a good bundle together with the bright greens and muted pinks I was gathering. I started playing around on Stash fabrics design wall, though, and found a fabric combination that I really like. The Heather Ross Floral Medallion really pulls it together!

.

Here are the fabrics I chose:

Bonnie Christine, Sweet As Honey, Garden Gate in Berry

Victoria Johnson, Whisper, Dashes in Pink

Heather Ross, Tiger Lily, Medallion in Cream

Karen Lewis, Blueberry Park, Kite Tails in Lime

Lecien, L’s Modern Basics, Text in Blue

Maureen Cracknell, Nightfall, Labyrinthine in Dusk

A note about scale:

  • While I believe scale is a very important part of fabric selection, the fabrics shown in my Color Play images are not always perfectly to scale. I do my best, by you should always double check scale before ordering!
