Quilt Theory: Introducing Highland Tile

I’m so excited to share with you today some more details about Highland Tile, my debut quilt pattern for a new pattern company called Quilt Theory. In celebration, I have a giveaway for you as well!

First, a little about Quilt Theory:

quilt-theory-logo

In February 2016, a group of quilters connected to cultivate relationships with others running businesses in the quilting industry. A tight-knit group was quickly woven together as we shared successes, answered questions, and supported one another. What started as a way to collect real-time insight and expertise quickly evolved into an opportunity to collaborate.

Our goal at Quilt Theory is to create simple and modern quilt patterns, and we challenged ourselves to design a line of patterns printed on small cards. As a group, we have become a strong team as we worked through pattern writing, testing, editing, and quilting.

Quilt Theory designers have been featured in 20+ major quilting publications and international quilt exhibits. Combined, we have 47 years of quilting experience, and we are excited to share our debut collection for Fall 2016.

PDF patterns are available now through our website QuiltTheory.com. Pattern cards are coming soon to a local quilt shop near you! Let your local quilt shop know you want them to carry Quilt Theory patterns.

When I first started thinking about my Quilt Theory design, I wanted to create something that would make even a beginning quilter feel like they could pull it off well. I liked the idea of an over-sized block made into a whole quilt because it gives a lot of visual impact but doesn’t take a ton of time. I also thought that more experienced quilters would appreciate that this is a quick-finish quilt!

As I was designing, I was reminded of the medallions and bold colors you see in Mexican tiles.  So of course, I had to choose a bold color scheme.  And this one was certainly out of my normal comfort zone!

While looking through the pictures on my @dailycolorpalette Instagram account, I saw this palette and decided to use the burgundy and chartreuse.

Robert Kaufman was kind enough to send me some Kona cotton solids to make this quilt. I selected Bordeaux, Peapod, and Graphite.
file_000

When it came time to choose thread, there was no question- Aurifil is the absolute best in my opinion! I was so thankful to them for sending me these gorgeous colors for my quilt.  They are 1147, 2605, and 4030.

file_003

I had a lot of fun quilting this one!

Handing this baby off to our fearless leader Michelle was tough, but I knew it was in good and capable hands, and I am so thrilled with the beautiful images she took!

I especially love the photos that Michelle took at Urban in Cashmere. I will definitely be stopping in there for a little shopping on my next trip across the mountains!

Color Play Friday: Fall Walk

Today is an exciting day for me because Quilt Theory is officially launched! Not only can you (FINALLY) see my pattern, but you can also buy it!  Head over to QuiltTheory.com to check out the whole collection.

Color Play Friday is hosted by Trina from In An Otter Life and myself. If you’re new to Color Play Friday, head over to my Color Play Friday page to see the rules and my palettes and bundles from previous weeks. You can also search #colorplayfriday on Instagram to see lots of past palettes and bundles.

A little tidbit about this photo- two Saturdays ago, Trina and I got together for a very impromptu Saturday morning walk with some of our other friends. There were babies and little kids and five mamas chatting about life, hobbies, health, work, etc. It was wonderful. We saw this gorgeous tree and Trina and I decided it needed to be a CPF picture. So while technically its my picture since I took it with my phone, it’s really both of ours.

This week, I decided to give myself the added challenge of picking all my fabrics from one fabric manufacturer. Because Robert Kaufman so generously donated fabric for me to make my Highland Tile quilt, I of course went straight to their website!

Elizabeth Hartman, Pacific, Raindrops in Brick

Heather Jones, Color Dash, Dash in Nectarine

Color Play Friday: French Coffee

Ever have those weeks where you feel like you got NOTHING done? That is so me this week! When I think about it, I actually did quite a lot, though I’m not FEELING very accomplished. Oh well, there’s always next week!

I loved the calm this photo invoked. I have no idea where Trina was when she took this, but I imagine a very mellow cafe in a Seattle suburb sometime around late morning. The sort of day where you have nothing planned and can take your time enjoying the atmosphere around you.

French Coffee Palette and Bundle.png

I found some beautiful teals in the shadow on the coffee cup that I thought would accent the obvious browns very well, so I decided to go with those two colors.

Here are the fabrics I chose:

Joel Dewberry, Bungalow, Swallow Study in Chocolate

Tim Holtz, Eclectic Elements, Game Pieces in Taupe

Tim Holtz, Wallflower Diamonds in Charcoal

Iza Pearl Design, Blush and Blooms, Texture in Aqua

Annabel Wrigley, Maribel, Grid in Turquoise

Amy Butler, Bright Heart, Oh Deer in Navy

Here is our photo for next week. Last Saturday, Trina and I and a few other friends went with some of our kiddos for a completely impromptu walk around her neighborhood. It was one of those perfect, unplanned adventures. This tree had such a  beautiful, peachy color that Trina and I decided it needed to be a CPF picture!

Blogger’s Quilt Festival:Teetering

Teetering is my first ever entry in the Blogger’s Quilt Festival! What a fun event for us to see everyone’s favorite work. I’ve very much enjoyed visiting old and new blogger friends this last couple of days and seeing what they had to show.

img_8712-1024x1024

Speaking of which, here is “Teetering”, my entry into the Modern Quilt Category. I made this quilt as my exercise for February’s Mighty Lucky  Quilting Club challenge from Season Evans.

At the time that I made it, I was a busy, busy girl. Besides the normal ‘three kids, volunteer work, starting a business’ stress, I was also teaching my son to drive and picking him up from school every day to take him to drivers ed. I didn’t realize going in how much stress that would cause, and I poured all my icky, frustrated feelings into this mini quilt.

teetering

Everything about this quilt was intentionally just a bit ‘off’. I wanted the blocks of grey and black to appear impossibly balanced, floating in air, and as if they were starting to drop.

I quilted the crap out of this thing, and ended up loving the result. I was disappointed at first that the quilting pushed the top around in such a way as the warp the design a bit, but in hindsight, I love how that adds to the whole ‘off kilter’ effect.

When I first finished this, I said that I needed to put it away for a bit in order to be able to appreciate it for what it was.  Here we are 7 months later, and it’s one of my favorites. I’m thinking this is a design style that I need to explore a bit more!

If you are new to my blog, welcome! You can find me on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

Here is some of my most recent work:

Color Play Friday: Birthday Bash and Giveaway!

Oh, happy day! Today, we’re celebrating, because it’s Color Play Friday’s First Birthday! And you know celebrating calls for gifts…  I have two giveaways for you today, but more on that later.

What else could we have a picture of this week besides a fun and colorful birthday cake?!

This picture was so bright and happy, and I wanted to capture the feeling of all that colorful confetti.

As a bonus this week, Trina and I opened up the CPF vault as an opportunity for a ‘second chance bundle’. This is where we can take a picture from the past, and have another go at it.

For my second chance bundle, I chose this photo of Trina’s. It was one of our very first Color Play Friday pictures, and I was thrilled with my bundle at the time. Looking back, I still love the bundle I chose, but I wanted to try another look.  second-chance-flowers-at-met-market

And, of course, I haven’t forgotten our giveaways!

First up, we have a $25 gift card from Hawthorne Threads.

Trina and I both love using their website to ‘shop’ for our Color Play Friday bundles, so we were thrilled when Hawthorne Threads said they would sponsor a giveaway to help us celebrate.

Our second giveaway is a little bundle and Grunge charm pack from my stash. With two bright Color Play Friday bundles this week, I felt like I needed a mellow bundle to balance things out a bit!
