Color Play Friday: Downtown Savannah

Hello friends!

If you’re new to Color Play Friday, welcome! This is my fun way of taking a little time each week to expand my color knowledge and fabric-selection skills. Often, a picture will take me completely out of my comfort zone and force me to combine fabrics in a new way.

You may have noticed things were a bit quiet around here last Friday. After being sick and traveling up to the mountains last week, I just never got around to posting! So today I’ll do both this week’s and last week’s pictures.

You can head over to my Color Play Friday page to see the rules and my palettes and bundles from previous weeks. You can also search #colorplayfriday on Instagram to see lots of palettes and bundles from the past! If you’d like to know more about participating in Color Play Friday, please feel free send me an email and I’ll let you in on all the details of how to join.

First up: Raspberries

I was super excited about this picture at first, because it seemed to have all the pinks that I love so much. But as I got into it and started pulling colors out, I noticed that they all were a little ‘dusty’. Not the super-vivid colors I was hoping for, but I am still fairly happy with the pink palette I chose. I decided to add the green in there to add interest and a little bit of contrast. If I was making a project from this bundle, that green would totally be my binding!

Raspberries Palette and Bundle

Here are the fabrics for this bundle:

Ann Kelle, Remix, Circles in Hot Pink

Robert Kaufman, Spot On, Small Spots in Bubblegum

Bari J, Mille Fleur, Chandelier in Sweets

Ann Kelle, Remix, Ovals in Bright

Timeless Treasures, Sketch Basic in Berry

Hawthorne Threads, Botany, Seeds in Kale

And here’s the photo for this week!

I love this photo titled Downtown Savannah from Sarah at 123Quilt. I expected to do a brown bundle, but all the light greens, blues, and purples where the light is reflecting on the stairs and bench kept drawing me in. I decided to just go with it and work completely with those… no brown in this palette, and I love it! Downtown Savannah Palette and Bundle

Here are the fabrics I chose:

Hawthorne Threads,  Norwegian Wood, Wallflowers in Pebble

Jane Dixon, Flamingos, Striations in Grey

Jennifer Sampou, Studio Stash, Bulging Stripe in Aqua

Carolyn Friendlander, Architextures, Crosshatch in Lake

Hawthorne Threads, Norwegian Wood, Thicket in Marine

Rae Ritchie, Scallop Dot in Powder

A note about scale:

  • While I believe scale is a very important part of fabric selection, the fabrics shown in my Color Play images are not always perfectly to scale. I do my best, by you should always double check scale before ordering!

Our next photo is titled Skyline:

I love this photo, but this palette is a hard one for me! Brown is certainly not my go-to color choice, but I did come up with a bundle that feels modern enough and I’m pretty pleased with.

A finish this week!

Hello, friends!

I haven’t been able to share much of what I’ve been sewing lately, as I’ve been working on several quilt tops for Quilt Theory’s next pattern release.

BUT, I did finish a baby girl quilt this morning that I CAN show you!  This pattern is from Jennifer Sampou and can be purchased from her website. (I did make some changes to the background strip piecing in order to make a smaller quilt.)

Pink is one of my favorite colors, and I loved getting to pull out all of my favorite pink scraps for this project.

file_000-3

I quilted this very simply by using all over wavy lines, occasionally overlapping them. The binding is Kona Bright Pink I think it frames the quilt out nicely.

Thanks for stopping by to read this (super-short) post and checking out my latest finish. I can’t wait to show you all more of what I’ve been up to!

Here is this week’s photo!

colorful-rocks-palette-and-bundle

I was actually really surprised this week. After selecting colors out of this picture to work with, I was honestly expecting to have a really tough time. This is certainly not my go-to color palette!  I thought I would hate my bundle. But instead, I managed to come up with something I really love, and fairly quickly too!

Finding the two Petit Collage prints was very helpful- they had all my colors already in them! Then I found the Good Hair Day print (which I love) that had many of my focal colors as well.

Here are all the fabrics I chose:

Katarina Roccella, Imprint, Buttonballs in Gold

Petit Collage, Party Animals Organic, Sticks in White

Petit Collage, Party Animals Organic, Party Stripe in Pink

Hawthorne Threads, Coyote, Beaded in Sunrise

Kim Andersson, Good Hair Day, Up Do in Whisper

Joel Dewberry, Notting Hill, Hexagons in Canary

I used the Hawthorne Threads website to find all my fabrics this week. I love their search by color function! These are all non-affiliate links.

This is a photo of my friend Trina’s dog Sky. All the bright colors created by the amazing lighting really drew my attention.

Sky Palette and Bundle.jpg

I originally selected a lot of colors from this picture, but the greenery and the coral of Sky’s tongue was what really stood out to me.  I would love to make a little girl’s quilt out of this bundle!

Color Play Friday: Rain on the Pavement

Whew! It’s been a busy week for my family. It’s end-of-semester in our school district, which means finals week. I have two high schoolers and let me just say that finals week is ROUGH for those kids! Lot’s of studying… add in extra curriculars and my daughter being sick and it starts to feel like a bit of a whirlwind.

Speaking of whirlwinds, I have been busy in my studio working on some fun stuff for Quilt Theory. If you follow me on Instagram, you may have already seen some sneak peeks. I can’t wait til later this year when I can show you what I’ve been working on!

This week’s photo is called Rain on the Pavement. I ran barefoot into my cul-de-sac to take this picture on a particularly rainy afternoon this winter because the reflection on the wet pavement was too cool-looking to pass up.

rain-on-the-pavement

My first instinct when faced with a black and grey palette is to go very modern and urban, but I decided to stretch myself this week and try for a feminine bundle with these colors.

Here are the fabrics I chose:

Wee Gallery, Adventure Awaits, Mini Grid in Black

Pat Bravo, Rock in Romance, Stardust in Midnight

Cotton and Steel Basics, Add it Up in Bone

Hawthorne Threads, Forget-me-not in Sky

Lizzy House, The Whisper Palette, Heraldry in Cloud

Katarina Roccella, Lavish Bejeweled, Seal in Ink

This photo from Sarah at 123Quilt makes me long for warm days at the beach. With all those toys strewn about, it looks like it was a really fun day!

Happy Friday, everyone!

I took this picture during a beach day with my kids last summer. Crab shells are a common sight along the beaches of the Puget Sound, but on this particular day the colors were just so vivid I had to take a picture.

Crab Shell Palette and Bundle.png

Because the shell is the focus of the picture, I wanted most of my bundle to be made up of red and orange. I’m happy with the balance that the green provided to this very warm bundle.
