Bonfire Sampler Blocks

Boy, did I ever get behind on this one! The last time I posted about this quilt was way back at the end of March. For the last few months, these block have been getting pushed aside, but I really made an effort the last few weeks to catch up so I can exchange with Trina and Mindy next week.

The Bonfire Quilt is a Block of the Month QAL from GenX Quilters and works out of the book Sister Sampler Quilts. The book includes setting instructions for three sampler quilts total, as well as lots of blocks. You don’t have to have a partner to participate; many people are making two sister blocks and keeping them both for their own quilts.

Here are April’s Blocks, named Box and Star Frame

And Tulip Lady Fingers, our May Block.

As you can see, I am still catching up on two of these.

And lastly the June block, Friendship Star

WHOOPS!

Can I point out that sewing on only three hours of sleep is a bad idea, even if its just a simple pinwheel? My teenage daughter flat out laughed at me when I showed her this.

It was an easy fix, though!

Hopefully, I’ve learned my lesson and won’t be getting myself three months behind on a swap again any time soon!

Here is this week’s picture!

Sprouts Palette and Bundle.jpg

Right away, I knew I wanted to play with that really cool dark slate color being reflected off of the black plastic. Add in the neon green of the sprouts, and I had a palette that I loved. I went very geometric this week, and of course added in some raindrop prints to represent spring in the Northwest!

Here are the fabrics I chose:

Rashida Coleman-Hale, Raindrop, Geo Dot in Teal

Elizabeth Hartman, Pacific, Raindrops in Navy

Denyse Schmidt, Franklin, Zig Zag in Glen

Latifah Saafir, Grafic, Brick Walls in Sulfur

Rashida Coleman-Hale, Zephyr, Whirlwind in Linen

Micheal Miller, Ta Dot in Starfruit

All my fabrics this week are from Stash Fabrics.

A note about scale:

  • While I believe scale is a very important part of fabric selection, the fabrics shown in my Color Play images are not always perfectly to scale. I do my best, by you should always double check scale before ordering!

Color Play Friday: Purplicious Gets Coffee

I know most of you are on summer break right now… we’re close. Soooooo close to having my kids home for a few months of having adventures and being lazy together. I can’t wait!

If you’re a new follower (hi, new friends!), Color Play Friday is hosted by Trina from In An Otter Life and me. You can head over to my Color Play Friday page to see the rules and my palettes and bundles from previous weeks.

Our photo this week is from Trina and it makes me curious. Who is Purplicious? Did she (or he?) come with Trina to Seattle from Oklahoma, or was she ‘adopted’ here? And I’ve met Ollie, but where has Purplicious gone?! I’m hoping Trina can clear things up for me.

Purplicious Gets Coffee Palette and Bundle

I was really excited to play with this wonderful purple this week. I was tempted to ignore the red in this picture, but I really wanted to give myself a challenge. Purple, red and teal… there’s a challenge for me! I also gave myself the added task of getting all my fabrics from the same shop. This week, I used JAQS Fabrics. If you get a chance, check out their scrap bundles– love them. (Those are not affiliate links- I really just love JAQS!)

Here are the fabrics I chose:

Nel Whatmore, Katherine’s Wheel, Purple Floral

Micheal Miller, Kiss Dot in Purple

Jan Avellana, A Nod to Mod, String Beads in Blue

Sharon Holland, Sketchbook, Woodblock in Flaxen

Robert Kaufman, Metro Living, Scarlett Ogee

Art Gallery Fabrics Giveaway!

Happy Friday, everyone! I have a fun giveaway for you today sponsored by Art Gallery Fabrics.

A few weeks ago, I shared with you the scrappy denim quilt that I made for Art Gallery Fabric’s absolutely amazing Quilt Market booth.  Check out that post to hear a little more about the making of the quilt.

IMG_8041_2

I was thrilled when my package from AGF arrived full of fabric goodies. They sent me some beautiful prints from various AGF collections, a couple of Pure Elements solids, one of their Denim Prints, and a whole bunch of Solid Smooth Denim to work with.

I was immediately enamored with the denim. It has that beautiful sheen that I admire in other AGF fabrics, but with an added iridescence that was mesmerizing. I kept moving it around the see more of that pretty shine!

I was also struck by how lightweight it is. It looks like jeans, but it has the drape softness of quilting cotton.  I really want to get more of the Printed Denim and use it for some garment sewing as well.

I’ll be honest- pictures cannot do this fabric justice!

IMG_8016_2

Because they compliment each other so well,  I wanted my readers to get a chance to try the Art Gallery Denim along with their quilting cottons. I contacted AGF about doing a giveaway, and they were gracious enough to put together this awesome fat quarter bundle based off the fabrics I used in my quilt!

Blue Bundle_1

So, on to the giveaway!

AGF is will be sending our lucky winner this Fat Quarter Bundle of ten prints/solids.

Color Play Friday: Brick Wall

How in the world is it Friday again already?!

Color Play Friday is hosted by Trina from In An Otter Life and me. If you’re new to Color Play Friday, head over to my Color Play Friday page to see the rules and my palettes and bundles from previous weeks.

So, here is my Color Play for the week!

Brick Wall Palette and Bundle

I was really surprised when I started pulling colors out of those bricks with just how light of pinks I was getting.  I kept trying to find darker red, but no luck. I was a little concerned that I wouldn’t be able to put a good bundle together with the bright greens and muted pinks I was gathering. I started playing around on Stash fabrics design wall, though, and found a fabric combination that I really like. The Heather Ross Floral Medallion really pulls it together!

.

Here are the fabrics I chose:

Bonnie Christine, Sweet As Honey, Garden Gate in Berry

Victoria Johnson, Whisper, Dashes in Pink

Heather Ross, Tiger Lily, Medallion in Cream

Karen Lewis, Blueberry Park, Kite Tails in Lime

Lecien, L’s Modern Basics, Text in Blue

Maureen Cracknell, Nightfall, Labyrinthine in Dusk

Baby Silas: Quilt 1

As you’ve heard me mention, my niece is expecting her first baby this summer. Of course, I was thrilled to start making quilts for the next generation of our family.

This adorable tractor can be found in Lori Holt’s book Farm Girl Vintage.

LPP- Silas' Tractor Basting

I must admit, this quilt is not my niece’s theme nor style… but I did have a reason behind the design.

You may remember that last Christmas I gave each of my parents a quilt.

This tractor was featured in my mom’s quilt, so I thought it would be fun to give her first great-grandchild a coordinating tractor.  And it’s made with scraps from my mom’s quilt!

LPP-Silas' Tractor Quilting

I bound baby Silas’ tractor quilt in leftover yardage from my dad’s quilt. This fabric was in the top, backing and binding of my dad’s Shimmer Quilt.

Color Play Friday- Rubber Duckies

Happy Friday! I am currently having fun kicking around Coeur D’Alene, Idaho. I love this city almost as much as I love home. There is so much beauty here, not just in nature, but in the gorgeous architecture. And bonus: I found a great quilt shop!

Color Play Friday is hosted by Trina from In An Otter Life and me. If you’re new to Color Play Friday, head over to my Color Play Friday page to see the rules and my palettes and bundles from previous weeks.

I thought this photo would be a fun choice for Color Play Friday. It leaves me wondering where Trina may have been when she came across these little guys.

Rubber Duckies Palette and Bundle.jpg

I originally planned to have a bright, fun bundle- something you would make a kid’s quilt out of.  But as I actually started pulling colors from the photo, I realized that they weren’t as bright as I originally thought. That took me in a new direction with a more muted, natural looking bundle.

.

Here are the fabrics I chose:

Lizzy House, Mini Pearl Bracelets in Yellow

Pat Bravo, Essentials 2, Intertwill in Gold

Anna Maria Horner, True Colors, Going Up in Pumpkin

Timeless Treasures, Sketch Basic in Tangerine

Shauna Scicluna, Forest Fables, Panel in Spring

Hawthorne Threads, Etched Hills in Charcoal

Vacation Stash Building

If you follow me on Instagram, you already know that I’m spending the next couple of days in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho. This is one of my favorite cities- beautiful scenery, great architecture, and some really cool shops.

Today I got the chance to visit a great quilt shop here in town called Bear Paw Quilting and Bernina to do a little stash building.

If you happen to be in the area I would definitely reccomend dropping in! They have a huge selection of Moda, TONS of Kona cotton, as well as reproductions and Civil War prints.  Also, notions galore!

A special shout out to Cathy and Patti, who were so sweet and fun to chat with while I picked fabrics.

Speaking of which, here is what I got today!  I’ve been needing to bulk up my oranges, so that was my focus today, but teal was apparently calling me as well.

From left to right this is Kona Flame, Kona Papaya,  Just a Speck in Mango (Jen Kingwell), Daysail Buoys in Aqua (Bonnie and Camille), Atruim Needlepoint in Mint (Joel Dewberry)

Color Play Friday: Late Summer in My Garden

Being sick sucks, doesn’t it?! Earlier this week, I was sick and -I’ll admit it- a bit whiny about it. But, things are looking up! It’s Friday, and I’m well again and feeling a little feisty. Which is probably why my palette is so firey this week!

If you’re new around here, Color Play Friday is hosted by Trina from In An Otter Life and myself. Head over to my Color Play Friday page to see the rules and my palettes and bundles from previous weeks.

A couple of years back, I tore out most of the grass in my front yard and replaced it with a cottage garden. It was a bit of a risky move, but I love coming home in spring and summer to flowers everywhere. I took this snapshot one day last summer.

Late Summer Palette and Bundle

I decided to ignore all the peripheral colors this week and just focus on the yellow/orange flowers. After a couple of weeks with browns and dark colors, I needed to get back to my one true fabric love: bright, saturated, fun prints.

I found all my fabrics on Hawthorne Threads’ website this week, so all of the following links will take you there so you can buy up all this loveliness!

Here are the fabrics I chose:

Carolyn Friedlander, Doe, Ladder Lines in Flame

Dear Stella House Designer, Polka Dot in Orange

Alison Glass, Sunprint, Grow in Tangerine

Katy Jones, Priory Square, Thru the Wire in Marmalade

Karen Lewis, Blueberry Park, Scruffy Daisy in Canary

Joel Dewberry, True Colors, Herringbone in Yellow
